What is ILLiad & Document Delivery?

If you need a book or journal article that Scott Memorial Library does not own, we can order a copy for you from another library. If Scott Library owns a print copy of a journal article that cannot be retrieved online, we may be able to scan and deliver a PDF to you at no charge. Requests are managed online through the ILLiad system, and fees may apply. Login or create an ILLiad account to request an item.

How much does it cost?

While Scott Memorial Library subsidizes the majority of the cost, a small fee may be required. A fee is only charged if we must get the item from another library. There is no charge to have items scanned from the Scott Library's print collection.

  • Students: 20 free requests per academic year

  • Faculty, Staff, Residents, Fellows, & Postdocs: $5.00 per request

What forms of payment do you accept?

Faculty, Staff, Residents, Fellows, and Postdocs are asked to select a default payment option when registering for an ILLiad account. This payment option is saved in your account for future use.

  • Invoice: Select this option to have invoices mailed to you. We accept cash or check. Payment is due within 30 days of receipt. Failure to pay invoiced charges may result in loss of library privileges.

  • Interdepartmental Charge (IDC): Select this option if your department should be billed directly. Please make arrangements with your department before submitting an IDC code as payment.

What materials can I get from other libraries?

Availability of specific titles will vary, but we can usually find:

  • Journal articles
  • Books
  • Book chapters

The following items are not available:

  • Whole issues of journals
  • Rare books/journals
  • Textbooks
  • AV materials
  • Software
  • Unpublished conference materials
  • Materials for personal interest/leisure reading
  • Dissertations & Theses* (many titles can be purchased from UMI Dissertation Publishing)

This service is designed to support the academic and clinical needs of students, faculty, staff, researchers, and clinicians of Thomas Jefferson University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. Requests should be directly related to Jefferson coursework, research, or clinical need. Occasionally, library staff may seek clarification of requests. Library staff reserve the right to cancel any request for any reason.

How long will it take for items to arrive?

We cannot guarantee items will arrive by a certain date. The turnaround time will depend on the type of material, how many libraries are able to send a copy, and how long it takes for that copy to arrive. Our best estimate is:

  • Articles: 1 or more days
  • Book Chapters: 1 or more days
  • Books: 7 or more days (please allow time for shipping)

  • Rare titles may take longer

Where do I pick-up materials when they arrive? Will I receive them electronically?

  • Articles & Book Chapters are delivered electronically. You will be notified via email when a PDF can be downloaded from ILLiad.

  • Books are checked out at the Service Desk (Library, 2nd floor). You will be notified via email when the book has arrived.

I'm an online/distant student. Can I request materials? How will I receive them?

Yes. We will deliver items electronically whenever possible. You will be notified when the PDF can be downloaded from ILLiad. If you need an entire print book, we may be able to FedEx it to your address. To return it, simply ship it back before the due date using the same box it arrived in. A pre-paid return shipping label will be included with the book.

Please note: We can only ship items within the continential United States. Some items are restricted and cannot be shipped.

I submitted an order, but I don't need it anymore. Can I cancel it?

An order can only be cancelled if it has not yet been processed by the library that is sending the material to us. Once the other library processes and sends the item, the order cannot be cancelled.

I forgot my ILLiad username/password. Can I reset it?

Yes, you can reset your password online. Your ILLiad username is your campus key.

A password reset link will be emailed to you. It may take up to 15 minutes for the password reset email to arrive. Please only click the Password Reset button once. Multiple attempts may result in errors.

I'm not eligible for this service. How can I find the items I need?

Even if you're not eligible for Scott Memorial Library's service, you likely have access to a similar service through another library.
